UBC-O Students angry at potential tuition hike
UBC-Okanagan is talking about a tuition hike next year - and students are none too pleased.
The university is looking at bumping up tuition by two percent for domestic students, and four percent for international students.
AM1150 spoke with students on campus about this news. Here are some of their comments:
- "Inflation rates didn't actually go up this year so the two percent increase is kind of redundant."
- "It's hard enough to get by as it is. It does cost quite a bit between tuition and fees, parking and books..."
- "I'm in my second year of loans, and I'm already $20,000 in debt already. The institution hasn't really taken into account that the students are getting more and more in debt."
- "Pretty soon there's going to be a huge class difference. So, only rich students will be able to attend university, and the common Canadian kid won't be able to."
- "We're definitely not all for it. It's brutal - especially for international students. We're definitely not fans."
The proposed tuition increase has to first get approval from the university's Board of Governors before it can come into effect.
